From Idea to Shelf: A Timeline for Launching Your Own Product Line

You’ve got an idea — a supplement, a skincare serum, maybe even a full wellness range. But how long will it take to turn that idea into a retail-ready product, and what actually happens between the concept stage and getting your first sale?

At SKD Pharmaceuticals, we guide clients from blank page to boxed product. In this blog, we break down the typical timeline and process for launching your private label brand, so you know exactly what to expect — and how to plan it right.

Phase 1: Idea & Product Planning (Week 1–2)

Every great product starts with a clear vision. During this phase, we work with you to answer key questions:

  • What’s the product? A serum? A supplement? A full range?
  • Who is it for? What skin type, health goal, or niche market?
  • What format works best? Capsules, powder, cream, serum, etc.
  • Are there specific ingredients, trends, or claims you want to focus on?

Deliverable: Product brief, branding direction, regulatory considerations.

Phase 2: Formulation & Ingredient Sourcing (Week 2–6)

Once we know what you want to create, our formulation team begins developing your product:

  • Ingredient research and compatibility
  • Suggested actives based on your goals
  • Sample formulation development
  • Supplier validation and sourcing
  • Vegan, cruelty-free, or allergen-free options if needed

For supplements, we also consider bioavailability, taste masking (if powdered), and delivery system (e.g. liposomal, delayed release, etc.).

Deliverable: Sample-ready formulation and cost proposal.

Phase 3: Sampling & Feedback (Week 6–8)

Once your sample is ready, we send it to you for evaluation. This is your chance to:

  • Test the texture, flavour, colour, and scent
  • Review product performance and aesthetics
  • Provide feedback for any tweaks

We offer up to 2–3 rounds of refinement to make sure the product feels right before final approval.

Deliverable: Final formula sign-off.

Phase 4: Packaging, Labelling & Compliance (Week 8–10)

While formulation is finalised, we work on the product’s visual identity and legal documents:

  • INCI list (for cosmetics) or supplement facts panel
  • Front/back label copywriting
  • Allergen and claims compliance (UK regulation, ASA guidelines)
  • CPSR, COA, and PIF documentation as needed
  • Packaging selection: jars, pouches, droppers, pumps, cartons

Deliverable: Approved packaging and print-ready artwork.

Phase 5: Manufacturing & Production (Week 10–14)

Once everything is approved, production begins:

  • Ingredient batching and preparation
  • Mixing, filling, quality checks
  • Packaging, labelling, and batch coding
  • Optional third-party lab testing or shelf-life testing

All products are made in UK-based, GMP-compliant facilities, with full traceability and safety built in.

Deliverable: Finished goods ready for collection or dispatch.

Phase 6: Delivery & Launch (Week 14+)

Your product is now ready to launch! You’ll receive:

  • Completed product inventory
  • Batch documentation and COAs
  • Optional support with marketing claims and sales strategy
  • Advice on stock management and reordering lead times
