When launching your own skincare brand in the UK, getting your label right is just as important as creating a good formula. Even if your product is effective, elegant, and beautifully packaged, if it doesn’t meet legal labelling requirements, it can be removed from sale, fined by Trading Standards, or worse — damage your brand’s reputation.
At SKD Pharmaceuticals, we help our clients navigate the UK cosmetic regulations with confidence. This guide breaks down what you must include on your skincare labels, and how to stay compliant whether you’re launching a serum, moisturiser, or full glamaceutical range.
Why Is Labelling So Important?
Your skincare label is more than a design choice — it’s a legal document. The UK Cosmetics Regulation (which mirrors the retained version of EU Regulation 1223/2009) requires that all cosmetic products provide certain information to consumers and regulatory authorities.
Your label must be:
✅ Accurate
✅ Legible
✅ Permanent
✅ Understandable to the average consumer
Failure to comply could result in product withdrawal, legal warnings, or your product being flagged on the UK’s OPSS portal (Office for Product Safety and Standards).
1. Product Name and Intended Use
You must clearly state what the product is and what it is used for — even if it seems obvious.
Examples:
- “Vitamin C Brightening Serum”
- “Hydrating Facial Moisturiser”
- “Anti-Ageing Peptide Eye Cream”
Avoid vague or misleading names. If the product has a dual use (e.g. face and body), that should be made clear.
2. Net Contents (Weight or Volume)
The amount of product must be stated in grams (g) or millilitres (ml), and appear on the front of the container.
Examples:
- 30ml
- 100g
For small containers (below 5g or 5ml), this rule may be relaxed — but it’s still good practice.
3. INCI Ingredient List
You must list all ingredients using the INCI (International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients) system, in descending order of weight.
Example:
Aqua (Water), Glycerin, Niacinamide, Sodium Hyaluronate, Tocopherol, Phenoxyethanol
Fragrance should be listed as ‘Parfum’, and allergens (from essential oils or perfumes) must be declared separately if they exceed specific thresholds (e.g. Limonene, Linalool).
This list is usually placed on the outer packaging or label back panel.
4. Responsible Person and Country of Origin
Your label must show the name and address of the Responsible Person (RP) — the legal entity responsible for ensuring compliance. If the product is manufactured or branded in the UK, the country of origin must be declared if sold abroad.
Example:
SKD Pharmaceuticals Ltd
Preston, United Kingdom
Made in the UK
If the RP is different from the brand owner (e.g. white label clients using SKD), this must be agreed upon in advance.
5. Expiry and PAO (Period After Opening)
You must include either:
- A Best Before Date (for unstable products like natural creams), or
- A PAO symbol (an open jar icon) showing how long the product can be used after opening
Example:
- Best before: 12/2026
- ![PAO symbol] 12M = use within 12 months after opening
6. Batch Code
Each unit must carry a batch or lot number to allow full traceability — essential in case of recalls or complaints. This can be printed or embossed on the label or container.
SKD Pharmaceuticals assigns batch codes automatically for every production run and includes it on all product packaging.
7. Warnings or Usage Instructions
If your product contains ingredients that require specific usage instructions (e.g. retinol, acids, peels), these must be stated clearly.
Examples:
- “Avoid contact with eyes.”
- “Use sunscreen during the day when using this product.”
- “For external use only.”
If your product contains allergens or actives, it’s good practice to include “Patch test before use.”
Optional But Recommended
- Vegan or cruelty-free icons – must be backed by evidence or certification
- QR codes – linking to PIF or further brand information
- Brand story, ethical claims, sustainability info – all of which enhance trust when truthful and verifiable
